2013 Miami Mini Maker Faire

Miami Mini Maker Faire The first annual Miami Mini Maker Faire was this past Saturday at The LAB Miami and was a huge success, drawing over 1,700 attendees. Makers from across Florida were represented at the Faire and had fantastic projects on display. Afterwards, the Faire received great coverage in the press from the Miami Herald, The South Florida Business Journal and the official Makezine blog!

In addition to the great coverage listed above, LiveLeak user Liza Trainer posted a fantastic video overview of the Faire:

It was great to see both local makers, local FIRST Robotics teams (Delray Beach team Eagles Robotics Xperience and Riviera Beach team Swamp Thing) and Maker friends from Central Florida well represented at the Faire. Pat Starace brought his collection of animatronic displays, including a new model which was notable for having determined exactly what it was that the fox says. Note that Pat currently has a Kickstarter campaign to make these animatronic robot puppets available: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/687217338/starbot-animatronic-robot-puppets.

I finally got to playtest Ian Cole’s Raspberry Pi powered Fireball HD pinball machine, which was very cool and gets bonus points assigned for use of Portal game audio in his pinball project.

Near the pinball machine was also located very unique and fun Daft Punk soundbooth that the group from The Hacklab in North Boynton put together.

Justin Lydle of The Learned Nerd had a full body, full color 3d scanner setup and was scanning attendees throughout the day. The scanning process took about 90 seconds and consisted of holding a pose while the system rotated you 360 degrees. I tried it out and am quite looking forward to seeing the result!
